UNGA debates competing draft resolutions on humanitarian aid to Ukraine ahead of vote | HIGHLIGHTS

CA, 24 Mar 2022
The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) opened discussion on Wednesday ahead of a vote on a draft resolution aimed at providing humanitarian assistance to Ukraine.

“We ask all those who stand against the war to vote with us. To vote for the draft entitled 'Humanitarian Consequences of the Aggression against Ukraine.' It will send a powerful message aimed at contributing to a breakthrough in humanitarian action on the ground and making Russia stop its unprovoked war," Ukraine’s UN Ambassador Sergey Kyslytsya said as he addressed the Assembly.

The 193-member UN General Assembly is faced with rival draft resolutions – both demanding aid access and the protection of civilians, medical personnel, and aid workers in Ukraine. But only one text – written by Ukraine and its allies and due to be voted on this week – criticizes Russia's role in creating the crisis.
