Russian opposition activist Alexei Navalny has been sentenced to nine years in a maximum-security prison on charges of fraud and contempt of court on March 22, 2022. He was already serving a 2.5 year sentence at a prison in eastern Moscow for parole violations. The Kremlin critic, who has been detained since January 2021, pleaded not guilty to the charges, calling the latest case against him “politically motivated”. Navalny supporters and human rights organisations have denounced the charges and accuse Putin of doing everything to silence his most prominent political foe.
