World governments have been imposing sanctions as a way of punishing Russian President Vladimir Putin and his supporters for invading Ukraine. Among those targeted are several rich and powerful Russian individuals who were added to a European Union blacklist. Most on the list are oligarchs who head state-owned conglomerates, as well as top Russian officials. Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich faces sanctions from both the EU and UK, but his two superyachts, which together are worth over US$1 billion, arrived in Turkey before the penalties went into effect. But Spain has seized a yacht that is reportedly linked to Serguei Chemezov, the head of Russian state-owned defence conglomerate Rostec Corporation. Former KGB officer Vladimir Strzhalkovsky owns a yacht that has been stuck in the Arctic after being denied access to fuel for weeks.
