The scenes of devastation seen in towns outside Kyiv are “just the tip of the iceberg” and besieged Mariupol will be “much worse”, Ukraine’s foreign minister has warned.
Ukrainian authorities are investigating possible war crimes after images from Bucha, a liberated town outside the Ukrainian capital, showed streets littered with the bodies of civilians and mass graves, in what its president described as genocide.
Dmytro Kuleba, Ukraine’s foreign minister, said: “The horrors that we’ve seen in Bucha are just the tip of the iceberg of all the crimes that have been committed by the Russian army in the territory of Ukraine so far.”
In a speech alongside British Foreign Secretary Liz Truss, he added: “I can tell you without an exaggeration but with great sorrow, that the situation in [the southern port city of] Mariupol is much worse compared to what we’ve seen in Bucha and other cities, towns and villages nearby Kyiv.”
