Trudeau, Williams Lake First Nation chief deliver remarks after PM visit | LIVE
CA, 30 Mar 2022
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Williams Lake First Nation Chief Willie Sellars and Indigenous-Crown Relations Minister Marc Miller are set to deliver remarks on Wednesday as Trudeau visits the community to meet with officials and residential school survivors.
The visit comes about two months after Williams Lake First Nation found 93 possible burial sites around the former St. Joseph's Mission Residential School. The anomalies were detected by ground-penetrating radar. Excavation is required to confirm whether they are human remains.
The school operated from 1886 to 1981 and has since been demolished. An additional property, the Onward Ranch, was added in 1964 to support the operational needs of the school. The sites were predominantly run by Roman Catholic missionaries.
The Indian Residential Schools Crisis Line (1-800-721-0066) is available 24 hours a day for anyone experiencing pain or distress as a result of their residential school experience.
