Métis, Inuit representatives speak after 1st historic meeting with Pope Francis | LIVE
CA, 28 Mar 2022
The Métis national council will hold a press briefing Monday alongside the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops, followed by a press conference by the Inuit Circumpolar Council.
A historic Indigenous delegation met with Pope Francis earlier on Monday to press him for a papal apology for the role of the Roman Catholic Church in Canada's harrowing residential school system. The trip was initially scheduled for last December but was delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The esteemed group of chiefs, survivors, elders, knowledge keepers and youths carries an enormous responsibility— sharing the stories and impact of more than 150 years of cultural genocide through 139 church-and-state-run institutions across the country.
Each group — Métis, First Nations and Inuit — has one hour with Pope Francis before meeting him as a collective for a final hour on April 1. Within that timeframe, they must also communicate their expectations for the Catholic Church's role in reconciliation moving forward.
The Indian Residential Schools Crisis Line (1-800-721-0066) is available 24 hours a day for anyone experiencing pain or distress as a result of their residential school experience.
