Mass Casualty Commission report: Former NS justice Linda Lee Oland to chair progress committee

CA, 01 Jun 2023
Canada's Public Safety Minister Marco Mendicino announced in Ottawa on Wednesday that retired appeals court justice Linda Lee Oland will be appointed committee chair to monitor the Mass Casualty Commission (MCC) report's progress after its release in late March.

According to Mendicino, the founding chair will play a key role in establishing the committee, who will be monitoring the progress of implementations of final report recommendations.

“While the events of April 2020 are permanently etched in our collective memory, we have entered a new phase in our recovery. It is now up to the governments of Canada and Nova Scotia to take up the work outlined in the Commission's final report to confront the tough questions that are posed in that final report to work together with law enforcement,” Mendicino said.

The announcement came on the May 31 deadline that MCC commissioners initially set for the federal and provincial governments to establish the body and founding chair. Former justice Oland will start work in mid-June, and oversee all 130 recommendations. MCC commissioners have also recommended that members of the committee should be in place by Sept. 1.
