Focus on the big picture

Former Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu warns against the collapse of democracy in Israel.

Global Report, 20 Dec 2021
Mr. Netanyahu warns that the current government in Israel legislates three anti-democratic laws.

The first law that Netanyahu refers to, is a law that prevents him personally cope in the following elections, although in fact he has won the previous elections with 36% of the votes, and who now serves as Prime Minister of Israel actually lost the elections as he received only 6% of the votes (but the loser form coalition with other candidates who lost the election and together they formed the current government, whom together and while united, definitely won the election)

This law that will not allow Netanyahu to be elected will be definitely contrary to the basic rules of democracy since it allows the current power and bureaucrats who never won the public trust to deprive the most popular candidate from being elected in free elections. So yes, if it’s true, IF it’s true, it’s bad.

We believe that the State of Israel will not pas such an anti-democratic law, as by doing so Israel will lose its status as a democratic state and will join the row of problematic countries in which their “democracy” is limited to the only candidates that the ruling government allow them be elected.

The second law that Netanyahu warns that is an anti-democratic, is a law that gives policeman to search the homes, computers and mobile phones of of civilians and political opponents without any proven legal justification and judicial order.

This is definitely a law identified with fascist states, but we are sure that the State of Israel will not form such an anti democratic law.

The third law Netanyahu warns against is a law prohibiting the people of Israel to discuss political issues on social networks.

Here he lost us.

If the claim is correct and the current Israeli government will limit the political discourse in social media, it will certainly join the State of Israel to long and dark list of dictatorial countries. But… it is not clear to us at all what Netanyahu is talking about and bases on what he point this serious claim.

Israeli democracy is definitely NOT the only democracy in the Middle East, and it certainly suffers serious problems. But freedom of expression in Israel and freedom of the press are in line with the most liberal countries in the world, and the civil rights of Jewish citizens, as opposed to Palestinians, indeed limited to what real democracy should be, but Israel certainly deserve a definition of a democratic state compared to any other western democratic country.
