COVID-19: Ontario announces new restrictions ahead of back-to-school | FULL
CA, 04 Jan 2022
Ontario Premier Doug Ford and chief medical officer of health Dr. Kieran Moore announced new public health measures Monday as the province continues to hit records in daily COVID-19 infections. Deputy Premier and Health Minister Christine Elliott will also be in attendance.
Sources told Global News on Sunday that Ford and his cabinet were meeting to discuss possibly implementing new restrictions, though they would not say what those measures could be.
It comes just as students are set to return to school on Jan. 5, even as parents and doctors both express concerns over a return while other provinces have delayed their own back-to-school dates for Jan. 10 or later.
The announcement also follows several days of the province setting record numbers of cases, with 16,714 on Sunday and 18,445 on Saturday, the highest the province has seen since the pandemic began.
Ontario reported 16,714 new COVID-19 cases Sunday and an increase of 10 people in ICUs with virus. Health Minister Christine Elliott said there are 224 people in intensive care with COVID-19.
