AFP, 10 Dec 2021
In Africa this week, South Africa approves Pfizer's coronavirus booster shots for over-18s, as the Omicron variant dominates rising new infections; in the Gambia, freshly re-elected President Adama Barrow faces the stark early challenge of lowering the political temperature in the fledgling democracy and tackling its economic woes; Ethiopia's Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed returns to Addis Ababa from the battlefront after pro-government forces claim major advances in their fight against Tigrayan rebels; and in Burkina Faso, over 30 years ago, radical leader Thomas Sankara sent 600 youngsters, most of them orphans, to train in Cuba. Within a year, Sankara's dream of immersing marginalised children in Burkina's revolution was wrecked after he was cut down by assassins.
