Angry protesters in India set fire to train carriages on January 26, 2022, during a protest about railway jobs. Police dispersed the crowd using tear gas and batons, and arrested about a dozen protesters in a violent clash. Video on social media also showed officers entering homes of suspected protesters and flogging them. The demonstrations in the eastern state of Bihar began earlier in the week, as young jobseekers claimed that government-run entrance exams for railroad workers were being carried out unfairly. Unemployment has long been a sore point for the Indian economy, with the jobless numbers climbing to 7.8 per cent in 2021, the worst since the 1970s.
