With fears of a possible Russian invasion of Ukraine rising after Moscow massed about 110,000 troops near the border, Ukrainian civilians have started to take self-defence courses in hopes of supporting their own military. Russia has repeatedly denied that it plans to invade Ukraine, calling its troop deployments a defensive move to deter Ukraine from joining Nato. But US officials say Russia is on track for a full-scale invasion by mid-February. US President Joe Biden and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz emerged from talks to say their nations are “in lockstep” in their response to Moscow. French President Emmanuel Macron has said he thinks a deal to avoid full scale war in Ukraine is possible based on his discussions with Russian leader Vladimir Putin.
