Nova Scotia wildfires: Emergency officials provide latest on blazes, evacuations in Halifax | LIVE
CA, 01 Jun 2023
Officials are expected to deliver an update on the Nova Scotia wildfires on Thursday, after authorities delivered Wednesday briefings as wildfires continued to burn in Nova Scotia, where they reiterated the importance of following the no-burn rule.
Officials said the Halifax-area fire is one of three out-of-control wildfires burning in the province, straining resources and forcing evacuations.
In an update Wednesday morning, David Steeves, a technician of forest resources with the Department of Natural Resources and Renewables, said the fire burning in the Tantallon and Hammonds Plains area has now grown to 837 hectares, an increase of nearly 50 hectares since the previous day.
During a separate press conference, Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston said that eight illegal burns were reported overnight that defied the provincewide fire ban. “I do not know what they’re thinking,” he said, adding that anyone defying the burn ban would face a $25,000 fine.
