Tens of thousands of farmers in India took part in a 10-hour nationwide strike on September 27, 2021. The protest, which was supported by the country’s major opposition parties, came one year after lawmakers passed controversial agriculture reform laws. For months, farmers have been demanding the withdrawal of the measures, arguing that the change favours large corporations. The government says the laws are needed to modernise and energise a sector that supports about 60 per cent of the population.
