US national security adviser Jake Sullivan and China’s top diplomat Yang Jiechi met in Switzerland on October 6, 2021. Their meeting in Zurich ended with Washington and Beijing committing to continue holding talks at a senior level. Tempers flared at their dramatic first meeting in Alaska in March, when Yang lashed out at the US, saying it was not entitled to talk to China from a “position of strength”. In Zurich, the pair discussed their nations’ long-standing grievances, as well as potential areas of cooperation. They also agreed in principle for US President Joe Biden and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping to hold a virtual meeting before the end of 2021.
