A failure to defend Taiwan would be catastrophic for peace in Asia and the island would do whatever it took to protect itself, Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen said on October 5, 2021, as Beijing continues to deploy a record number of People’s Liberation Army (PLA) aircraft to fly into the island’s air defence identification zone. Taipei says that as of October 5, at least 150 PLA Air Force planes have entered the southern part of the self-ruled island’s air defence identification zone since October 1, with 52 jets sighted on October 4 alone. Some military analysts say Beijing’s show of force is a warning to Tsai and other leaders ahead of the 110th anniversary of the founding of the Republic of China on October 10, a date known as “double tenth”.
