Ahead of the local elections, Boris Johnson vowed to defeat efforts from “liberal left lawyers” to scupper his plan to send asylum seekers to Rwanda as he promised: “We will get it done.”

The Prime Minister said he had always expected “legal eagles” to challenge the policy and to make it “difficult” to implement.

Downing Street said yesterday that it expects the first flights to Rwanda under the Government's new asylum system to take place in a "matter of months". The Government had wanted to get the system up and running within "weeks" but legal challenges appear to be slowing it down.
