Home Secretary Priti Patel has stood by her plan to send asylum seekers arriving in the UK “illegally” to Rwanda, as she said there was “no simple solution” to tackling migrant crossings.
Tens of thousands of Channel migrants will be given a one-way ticket to the African country under plans unveiled by Boris Johnson on Thursday.
Anyone entering the UK illegally or who has arrived without authorisation since January 1 could now be relocated to Rwanda, where they will be considered for asylum and resettlement.
The Prime Minister said they would be given the opportunity to “build a new life” in Rwanda, supported by an initial £120 million of UK Government funding as part of the “migration and economic development partnership” with the landlocked east African state.
