The United Nations human rights chief Michelle Bachelet ended a six-day trip to China on May 28, 2022, the first such visit by a UN human rights high commissioner since 2005. She visited Kashgar and Urumqi in the Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region in China’s far west. The Chinese government has been accused of unlawfully detaining Uygurs and other predominantly Muslim minority people in the area. Bachelet called Beijing to review its counterterrorism and deradicalisation policies and to comply with the international human rights standards.
