Canada's firearms legislation: Public safety minister speaks about proposed handgun bill | LIVE
CA, 02 Jun 2022
Canada's Minister of Public Safety Marco Mendicino is expected to speak about the impact the new firearms legislation will have on the country on Wednesday in Surrey, B.c., as well as federal support for crime prevention and community safety.
The news conference comes after the federal government announced on Monday that it has tabled legislation seeking to freeze the buying, selling, importing and trading of handguns nationwide.
The move is among several firearm-control measures in the new Bill C-21, which also targets gun smuggling and trafficking as well as domestic abusers who own firearms, among other restrictions. The bill will also increase penalties for firearm-related offences.
He will be joined by MP of Surrey, Newton Sukh Dhaliwal and MP of Surrey Centre Randeep Sarai. Following the press conference, Minister Mendicino as well as MPs Dhaliwal and Sarai will take questions from the media.
