Monsoon floods devastate Pakistan: 'Humanitarian needs are unprecedented, situation is very fluid'
FRANCE24, 31 Aug 2022
Officials in Pakistan raised concern Wednesday over the spread of waterborne diseases among thousands of flood victims as waters from powerful monsoon rains began to recede in many parts of the country. Massive flooding from the rains since mid-June has killed at least 1,162 people, a phenomenon experts blame on climate change. For further analysis on the devastating effects of Pakistan's relentless monsoon, FRANCE 24 is joined by Dr. Deepmala Mahla - Vice President of Humanitarian Affairs at CARE. She says that they are "imagining a scenario where the humanitarian needs are going to swell and this is really a time where all support needs to come to Pakistan." In response to FRANCE 24's Mark Owen addressing the growing threat of watern-born disease, Dr. Mahla warns that "once a disease outbreak happens, it is very difficult to contain." She asserts that time is of the essence: "If we don't act now, it is only going to grow bigger. And as CARE, as the humanitarian community, we totally support the call by the UN and the government of Pakistan for urgent and immediate help."
