Many communities worldwide are reeling from wildfires threatening their homes amid scorching heatwaves. Chongqing, a municipality in southwest China, has waged battles against heatwaves and droughts this summer. What made matters worse is a raft of spreading wildfires that began on August 17. People from all walks of life lost no time in efforts to beat back the raging flames.

One resident, who caught the eye of many, is a foreign teacher pitching in the battle against the blaze. He is Dr. Francis Stonier, a 42-year-old American and a teacher at the city's Southwest University. Dr. Stonier taught people how to use chainsaws and went up mountains to cut wood, that served as fire barriers. His efforts were shared on social media, melting the hearts of many. After moving to Chongqing in 2017, he now views the city as his second home.
