After U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi made a provocative visit to Taiwan on August 2, the People's Liberation Army (PLA) responded with live-fire drills in six zones around Taiwan island. These drills represent an appropriate response for the U.S.' lack of sincerity to the one-China principle that it agreed to. Rather than trying to de-escalate, a U.S. Congressional delegation visited Taiwan island on August 15. The PLA has now expanded the live-fire drills to include aircraft carrier formations. Can the U.S. halt these provocative visits by its members of Congress? How have these visits and subsequent drills impacted China, the U.S., the Taiwan region and cross-strait ties?
