Marking 77 years since end of WWII, Japanese leader says nation will never again wage war

In a speech marking 77 years since the end of World War II, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida vowed on August 15, 2022, his country would never again wage war. Japan surrendered unconditionally to Allied forces in 1945 after six years of global conflict. Kishida’s remarks included no mention of Japanese wartime aggression across Asia. On August 13, members of the prime minister’s cabinet visited Tokyo’s Yasukuni Shrine, which commemorates Japan’s war dead, including 14 Class A war criminals.
