Senator calls for government compensation package for survivors of forced or coerced sterilization
CA, 14 Jul 2022
Speaking Thursday at an announcement unveiling the Senate Committee on Human Rights’ report on forced or coerced sterilization, Sen. Yvonne Boyer called for a government compensation package for those women who have survived the procedure.
She said compensation should focus on the generational impact of forced sterilization.
Boyer detailed how Bill S-250, which would criminalize forced and coerced sterilization, tackles the issue of informed consent.
Boyer said that while it is important for there to be consequences for those who perform forced sterilizations, “We don’t want to remove the agency of women to be able to consent to a tubal ligation.”
She said to date their have been no real consequences for those performing forced sterilizations and said the practice is still going on in Canadian hospitals.
“I believe there are sterilizations happening today as we speak,” she said.
