Humanitarian aid is finally arriving in a remote area of Afghanistan that was hit by a powerful earthquake on June 22, 2022. Thousands of people have been left homeless or injured in Paktika and Khost provinces where the quake killed at least 1,150 people and an aftershock on June 24 took another five lives. The initial quake was measured at magnitude 6.1 by the European Mediterranean Seismological Centre and 5.9 by the US Geological Survey. Afghanistan had already been reeling from a humanitarian crisis, with the flow of aid and financial assistance curtailed since the Taliban seized power in August 2021. Aid organisations have in the past accused the Taliban of diverting assistance to people who support their rule . Khan Mohammad Ahmad, a senior official in Paktika, said relief efforts would not be interfered with.
