Pope Francis is expected to arrive in Canada on Sunday in a bid to atone for the abuses suffered by Indigenous peoples and their ancestors at the hands of the Catholic missionaries at Canada's former residential schools.

The papal visit to the country is primarily intended for the pope to apologize in person, on Canadian soil, and will meet Indigenous leaders and residential school survivors during his five-day trip.

Thousands of people are to travel by bus, plane and even boat in the coming days to attend events during the historic papal visit.

Pope Francis will remain in Edmonton for a couple of days before going to Quebec City on Wednesday and Iqaluit on Friday. The visit will include public and private events, with an emphasis on Indigenous participation.
