A European Parliament delegation visited Taipei on July 20, 2022, in the latest show of support for the self-ruled island from Western politicians since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and amid stepped up efforts by mainland China to isolate Taipei diplomatically. Beijing has responded angrily to remarks by visiting EU Vice-president Nicola Beer, who said the Taiwanese people should be allowed to determine their own future. US Speaker of the House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi is also reportedly planning to visit Taipei in August. Chinese mainland officials oppose any official exchanges between foreign politicians and Taiwan, a self-governed island that Beijing claims as its own territory.
