Images from January 6 hearings will 'really fuel the first stages of the next presidential election'

Donald Trump's actions during the storming of the US Capitol by his supporters last year were under the microscope as the House committee investigating the attack wrapped up its summer public hearings with a televised primetime finale on Thursday. Despite desperate pleas from aides, allies, Republican congressional leaders and even his family, Donald Trump refused to call off the January 6 mob attack on the Capitol, instead “pouring gasoline on the fire” by aggressively tweeting his false claims of a stolen election and telling the crowd of supporters in a video address how special they were. For more analysis on Thursday night's January 6th primetime hearing FRANCE 24 is joined by Dr. Robert Gutsche, Author and Senior Lecturer in Critical Digital Media Practice at Lancaster University. "I don't know how much more really we can say Donald Trump had a role in this," explains Dr. Gutsche. "I think that was the major play out of these hearings. But I think there are many more people who need to be questioned. I think what's happening is a lot of these congressional aides and a lot of these presidential aides and others are coming through to try and whitewash their involvement in Trump's rise to success as some sort of political way to keep them in the game. But I think that we have a lot more questions for people around that such as why there wasn't Capitol security, why there wasn't a bigger presence of forces." Dr. Gutsche says the public is still demanding answers as to "how was this able to happen and what are we going to do in the future to protect people in those buildings."
