Istabraq Baraka was just 17 and three months pregnant when she was murdered by her new husband last year. "She died from a severe beating, which caused bleeding on the brain and lungs and broken ribs," recounts her mother, Nazmiya. Istabraq's case is part of a rising number of femicides in Gaza, which has been blamed on the Covid-19 pandemic and outdated laws and cultural views that offer women inadequate protection, say activists.
